Interview with KD Grace

Interview with KD Grace

About K D Grace/Grace Marshall

Voted ETO Best Erotic Author of 2014, K D Grace believes Freud was right. In the end, it really IS all about sex, well sex and love. And nobody’s happier about that than she is, otherwise, what would she write about?

When she’s not writing, K D is veg gardening. When she’s not gardening, she’s walking. She walks her stories, and she’s serious about it. She and her husband have walked Coast to Coast across England, along with several other long-distance routes. For her, inspiration is directly proportionate to how quickly she wears out a pair of walking boots. She also enjoys martial arts, reading, watching the birds and anything that gets her outdoors.

K D has erotica published with SourceBooks, Xcite Books, Harper Collins Mischief Books, Mammoth, Cleis Press, Black Lace, Erotic Review, Ravenous Romance, Sweetmeats Press and others.

K D’s critically acclaimed erotic romance novels include, The Initiation of Ms Holly, Fulfilling the Contract, The Pet Shop. Her paranormal erotic novel, Body Temperature and Rising, the first book of her Lakeland Witches trilogy, was listed as honorable mention on Violet Blue’s Top 12 Sex Books for 2011. Books two and three, Riding the Ether, and Elemental Fire, are now also available.

K D Grace also writes hot romance as Grace Marshall. An Executive Decision, Identity Crisis, The Exhibition are all available.

Welcome KD! Well, let’s kick this off as we mean to go on. Tell me a bit about your latest books.

First let me say thanks for having me over, Charlotte. It’s a pleasure to be here on day 3 of the Lakeland Witches Trilogy blog tour. The Lakeland Witches Trilogy is paranormal erotic romance. It’s the story of Tara Stone and the Elemental Coven and their on-going battle with the demon, Deacon, who seeks revenge against Tara Stone and her coven family for her mother’s thwarting of Deacon’s plans. Though Tara’s mother is long dead, Deacon’s lust for vengeance is unquenchable, and he’ll do anything to hurt Tara Stone and the Elemental Coven. Deacon is a lust demon, and his seductive powers have horrendous consequences for anyone who succumbs. The Elemental Coven would, of course, attract him because they practice a very rare, very powerful form of sex magic. What attracts each to the other is the very thing that will destroy them in a life and death battle for the survival of the coven.

How did you come up with the titles and storyline?

The title went through a very long metamorphosis. When the book was conceived as only a one-off novel, I entitled it ‘Love Spell,’ because there was a certain spell that involved sex, which was used to enflesh ghosts to walk among the living. When I pitched the novel to Xcite Books, I pitched it as ‘Ghost Riders,’ because the coven members often, jokingly, refer to themselves as ghost riders. Xcite didn’t like the title, and when it became clear that the novel would actually have to be a trilogy, the first novel became Body Temperature and Rising because of the ghost element. The other titles, Riding the Ether and Elemental Fire, fit the stories. The title of the Trilogy has also been renamed for the relaunch, originally being called The Lakeland Heatwave Trilogy, Xcite decided that we needed to have a more paranormal title, and the trilogy was given lovely new covers and renamed The Lakeland Witches Trilogy.

How long have you been writing and what inspires you?

I’ve been writing ever since I was old enough to put pen to paper. I never wanted to do anything else. I’m inspired by just about everything. I find inspiration often when I go on long walks or when I work in the garden. I find inspiration in my dreams. I even find inspiration ironing, though I’d rather find inspiration drinking coffee and eating chocolate while reading a good book 🙂

How did you get published?

I sent out a LOT of submissions to a LOT of places, and got a LOT, LOT, LOT of rejections. Then I got a short story accepted in the now-defunct Scarlet Magazine, and actually got a check instead of a rejection letter! Success breeds success, and after I had my first short story published, the stories became easier and easier to sell. I sent my first novel proposal to several publishers before it was accepted by Xcite Books. I sent the standard three chapters and a synopsis. That was for my first novel, The Initiation of Ms Holly. My tenth novel will be published at Christmas time, and I’m writing the 11th now.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not writing?

I don’t have any spare time. Even when I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing. And when I’m thinking about writing, I walk, I work out at the gym. I grow my own veg. I read voraciously for pleasure. I think of new and creative ways to avoid doing housework.

What is your writing ritual?

On an ideal day, of which there are far too few, I get up and work out early in the gym or go for a long walk, then I write until lunch time. I have lunch and read for an hour then I write until dinner time. I then spend the evening with my husband unless I’m on a tight deadline, in which case I write until bedtime. That’s the ideal day. Sadly, I usually spend about a third of my time on PR and marketing, but that’s just a hazard of the job, and it’s worth it to get my books and my brand as much attention as possible.

Which book (and author) are you reading at the moment?

I’m hungrily devouring Voyager, book 3 of Diana Gabaldon’s fabulous Outlander series. I’ve read them before, but since the critically acclaimed Starz Outlander TV series is not yet available in the UK, I’m comforting myself with a long-over-due reread and loving every second of it. Can’t recommend them enough!

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Write like a crazy person! Never miss a chance to get some words down. Then write some more. Push yourself to finish a project before you begin rewriting it. Too many people rewrite the first three or four chapters ad nauseum and never finish what they start. Get the words down! That’s the most important thing. Then you’ll have something worth correcting. AND don’t give up! I had a gazillion rejections before I got my first story published. It was worth hanging on for.

Lakeland Witches 3 EF

Are you working on any future novels?

Right now I’m writing the next Grace Marshall novel. Grace Marshall’s novels are longer, more complex and more plot-driven, but still with plenty of sexy scenes. All through the writing of Grace’s Executive Decisions Trilogy, I kept getting requests for the resident Nerd genius, Wade’s, story, and I’m finally getting the chance to fulfil that request, which is also something I’ve really wanted to do. Interviewing Wade will be out in time for Valentine’s Day.

Ooh, I look forward to that! I’ve just started reading the second part of the Executive Decisions Trilogy. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I can’t imagine doing anything that doesn’t involve massive amounts of writing. I’d hope to have film or television rights sold for at least one of my novels for massive amounts of money so that I can spend my winters in a villa somewhere very sunny. But then again, I can write anywhere, and it doesn’t cost much 🙂

Thank you KD for popping by, and good luck!!

The image of a dark figure approaching her through the fog tightened her belly and her nipples, and yet at the same time sent shards of ice down her back. It was a dream, she told herself. Surely it had to be, as she gathered herself to run.

It was a gentle touch of her arm that woke her with a start, and she looked up into the dark eyes of Anderson. ‘Come with me, out of the rain.’ He offered her his hand and helped her to her feet. She was amazed to find that he was still in the black suit, no anorak, no water proofs, no proper walking boots.

‘I lost my compass,’ she said.

‘I’m very sorry to hear that,’ he replied.

Almost before she knew it they were descending. ‘Don’t worry,’ he spoke close to Marie’s ear. ‘I know the fells like I’ve lived here forever.’ Once we get to Grange, Tara will be waiting for us.’

He made no attempt to explain who Tara was, nor did he introduce himself. That was her first clue that he might have been aware of her voyeuristic escapade.

‘We’ll be down before you know it,’ he added, turning his face into the storm.

But they weren’t. The weather worsened to a downpour. Bent double in the wind, Marie was soaked to the skin and shivering by the time Anderson pulled her into a cave that she hadn’t even seen until they were safe inside.

‘We’ll wait it out here,’ he said. He offered her a smile and gestured around the cave. ‘There are lots of caves and quarries around the Lake district. Some are fenced off for the protection of curious tourists, and others, like this one, most people don’t know about.’

‘And your girl friend, won’t she be worried?’

The tolerant smile he offered made her aware of her mistake. ‘Tara knows what I would do in such weather.’ Then he added, ‘Though she’s very dear to me, Tara’s not my girlfriend.’

Before she could say anything he chuckled softly. ‘I know that you saw us together, and there’s no need to apologize. Neither of us was upset that you enjoyed our love making. In fact we rather hoped it would please you. Besides one must certainly expect such encounters when one chooses the middle of a well-traveled path for a rendezvous. Now remove your shirt for me, please.’

When she balked, he added. ‘You’re cold and wet. I only wish to make you more comfortable and prevent you catching your death.’ He had already shed his jacket and handed it to her. She was astonished to find it completely dry. ‘You may wear this.’

Guest Blog, Jeff Gardiner

‘Treading On Dreams’ by Jeff Gardiner is a contemporary romance set in modern day London. Below is the blurb and a short extract from the novel. Jeff is giving away two e-book copies of the novel (Kindle or PDF). To win just answer the following question: Which poet and poem inspired the book’s title?

Donny is obsessed with his housemate, Selena – but his love is unrequited. He enthusiastically accepts her willing friendship, which only fuels his deepening fantasies.

Jaz is their crazy landlord who likes sleeping with women – lots of them. He takes pleasure in educating the once innocent Donny in the hedonistic pleasures of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. It blows Donny’s mind.

Selena is engaged to Melvin – the perfect man – but is also keen to befriend the ever-demanding Donny … until she falls pregnant and her wedding looms.

Donny expresses his true feelings at the wedding, causing mayhem and anger. But there remains a chink of hope: perhaps Selena’s marriage to Melvin is not quite as perfect as it seems.

Treading on Dreams by Jeff Gardiner - 500

Extract from ‘Treading On Dreams’ by Jeff Gardiner

The marriage service seemed to go on forever.

Long, monotonous choruses accompanied the strumming of two guitar chords. The prayers began with ‘Lord I just wanna…’ followed by the obligatory praying for the bride and groom with laying-on-of-hands. When the bearded elder pressed his hand on Selena’s bosom, it occurred to Donny it was an excuse to touch the bride.

Then the photographs took days to complete, while the guests, ensconced at a nearby posh hotel, starved to death with only small glasses of Schlöer to stop them from dehydrating.

The dreaded speeches followed.

‘Thank you, so much, everyone, for sharing our special day,’ said Melvin, the groom.

Donny couldn’t help staring at Selena. She looked stunning in the simple ivory dress. It showed her magnificent figure in all its glory, unspoiled yet by the swell of pregnancy. Her hair curled in ringlets at the side of her face, falling from her veil and framing her lovely cheeks. Donny continued his gaze as her hand caressed her lips. The desperate urge to touch her became an overwhelming feeling of sorrow and loss.

The people at his table laughed at Selena’s father’s comments.

‘Does anyone remember that time my new son-in-law nearly burnt my house down last year when he lit the barbeque?’ Everyone laughed politely. ‘But anyway, we’re here to celebrate the love this couple clearly feel for each other. I can see how much they are in love from the joy in their eyes.’

Donny swallowed bile.

Then Melvin stood up to speak. ‘God has blessed me today by letting me marry the most wonderful woman in the world. With Jesus beside us, we aren’t so much a couple as a threesome.

A few guests sniggered.

Donny looked around with narrowed eyes. Scowling, he wrung the tablecloth as if it was wet.

The best man took his turn. ‘As a doctor, Melvin saves lives every day; as a Christian he works tirelessly for charity. He also finds time to help lead our church, preaching and ministering to the sick and infirm…’

Why did nobody mentioned Selena’s baby? As if it wasn’t why they were there today. Did they not know or were they ignoring it? He wanted them to know Melvin wasn’t the great shining example they assumed, but a total hypocrite—shagging his girlfriend whilst preaching morality. Could no one else see the hypocrisy?

Once the speeches were over, the servers poured more wine while the happy couple mingled. Donny sat back and listened to the clamour of myriad conversations. Voices buzzed around him until the hubbub became a grating irritant. Every sound intensified behind his eyes, which he momentarily closed.

‘Melvin truly is a holy man of God.’

‘They make such a perfect couple—so young and in love.’

As Donny sat listening to the inane conversations around him, they began to reverberate in his head and squeeze his temples like a pincer. Something uncomfortable stirred, churning his insides.

‘I was feeling quite depressed and then I remembered Melvin prophesied about Jesus healing the sick and that afternoon I made an amazing recovery.’

He didn’t know how much more he could take. The cacophony of voices became a crashing wave of atonal sound. Every sound was a spike hammering through his brain.

‘…Isn’t Melvin just the best…?’

‘…I’ve never seen a couple so in love…’

‘…and they’ll have such beautiful children…’

With a roar, Donny stood, his chair crashing to the floor. He grabbed the table with all his strength and knocked it on its side. The dishes hit to the floor, shattering. He had their attention.

‘Fatuous bullshit! You’re talking absolute, fucking bullshit. Can’t you see what’s going on? Melvin ‘goody-two-shoes’ got her pregnant, and you still think he’s wonderful. Selena doesn’t love him, but she’s too scared to say.’

His sister, Hazel, tried to stop him. He pushed her away. ‘I can’t bloody stand it any longer. I’m in love with you, Selena.’

People sat, speechless.

Some other guests got up, moving quickly towards him.

‘You can’t marry him…what’ll happen to me?’ He stopped, breaking down completely and slowly melted into an indistinct blob on the floor. ‘Who the fuck am I kidding? Why would she ever love me?’

Melvin, his father, and a few other men grabbed Donny. They carried him like a rolled up carpet. He kicked and struggled to no avail as they took him from the room.

‘Leave me alone, you bastards!’

Where the hell were they taking him?

His head ached. He was getting hotter and hotter while the world outside burst into flames. Finally, he tipped into a burning abyss.

Guest blog with erotic romance author, Lucy Felthouse

Writing From Experience by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985)

Many non-writers seem to think that erotic writers all write from experience. If that was the case then I’d be a gay man, a lesbian, a vampire, a werewolf, a soldier, a policeman, a policewoman, a shapeshifter, a dominatrix, a succubus… the list goes on. It’s silly, really. No one accuses J K Rowling of being a witch, Anne Rice of being a vampire or Stephen King a serial killer.

So there’s no reason to believe that erotica and erotic romance writers have done everything they’ve written about. Which is certainly not the case in my series, World of Sin, from Ellora’s Cave. After all, if that was true, it would make me a young man. Which I am most definitely not. And yet, I’ve written from experience so far in this series. Confused? Don’t be.

My experience (aside from the fact I’m not a virgin) is in the settings. The series starts in London, then Paris, Rome and after that, Amsterdam. I’ve been to all four of those places, and my characters are, in fact, following me around Europe. I’ve been travelling to one of these places each year for the last few years (with the exception of London, where I go at least two or three times a year) on cheap trips, and next year I’m hoping to visit Barcelona. So you can probably guess where Ryan and Kristian will go after Amsterdam.

It’s great fun writing real places into books, and in reviews I’ve been praised for capturing the atmosphere of places and making them feel real. Which is why I soak up as much as I can when I go on trips, take a ridiculous amount of photos and try to see things differently. For example, when I visited Rome, knowing I would write about it, I started looking for places where characters might meet, or sneak off to be together. It spices up trips that are already exciting, I can tell you! And it’s incredibly useful for research purposes, too.

So, although the characters and their exploits are completely and utterly fictional, bear in mind that I’ve really been to Rome, The Colosseum, Ostia Antica, the Roman Forum, and so on. The rest is just a matter of imagination… one of the main reasons I love writing so much. I just make it up as I go along 😀

Happy Reading!

Lucy x

Ryan came to the conclusion that perhaps this journey wasn’t so horrendous after all. He’d been a little miffed that the American girls, Shanna and Taryn, had wanted to tag along from Paris to Rome with him and Kristian. He’d been keen not to end up with any chicks who wanted more than a one night stand, figuring that any romantic entanglements would screw up their footloose and fancy-free gap year trip. Their last year of freedom, without commitment, before they went to University and had to grow up, buckle down.

In the here and now, however, Ryan decided that Shanna actually wasn’t that bad. It seemed she was determined to spice up the never-ending coach trip from Paris to Rome. Eight hundred and seventy miles, thirteen hours. They’d known when they’d booked it that it would be nigh on intolerable, but it was the cheapest way to travel. And having sat in the increasingly stuffy, tiny coach, Ryan could see why. It made cramped seats in coach class on a flight feel like first class.

Shanna had removed her jacket as the crap air-conditioning was utterly failing to cool down the cabin. It had been draped over her lap for a while before she slid it across so it covered part of his too. Ryan frowned, wondering why she thought it was a good idea to make him warmer. He was already melting in the heat. Then she slipped her hand beneath the jacket and moved it over his crotch. She squeezed his flaccid cock, making her intentions absolutely clear. He realized that if he continued to stare down at their laps it would be painfully obvious to anyone who glanced in their direction what they were up to. So he leaned over and kissed Shanna’s cheek, nuzzling her red hair out of the way to murmur into her ear.

“I’m going to try and act natural.” Then, remembering what had happened to him back in London when he’d ended up with cum-filled boxer shorts, he added, “Can you, uh, catch it in a tissue?”

Grinning, Shanna revealed the flimsy white material in her other hand. It appeared she’d already thought of that. Saucy wench—he liked her. She was a fun girl, gorgeous-looking and a great lay. Had things been different, he might have considered pursuing something long-term with her, but it wasn’t going to happen. He and Kristian had this one chance, this few months to live life to the fullest, do what they wanted, do who they wanted, go where they liked, and he wasn’t going to throw it away for a green-eyed, cute-accented chick. No way.

He wasn’t worried about upsetting her, though. He knew that she and her friend had a similar pact and outlook on their European travels. They too were hooking up, having a good time and moving on.

Ryan grinned out of the window. Life was good. A sexy girl was about to get his cock out on a coach and toss him off, and he was heading to the third destination on his gap year adventure. The Italian capital awaited and he couldn’t wait to see what it had in store.

Before he got there, though, he was going to have another orgasm on public transport. First the toilets on the Eurostar, now beneath a jacket on a coach. God, what was it with women and doing it in cramped, risky places? And Blanche—the French bird on the Eurostar—and Shanna weren’t the only ones he was thinking of. He was beginning to forget what it was like to have sex in a bed. Not that he was complaining—Christ, no. If a sexy woman propositioned him, who was he to refuse?

By now Shanna had undone his belt, button and fly and released his cock from his boxers. It had taken a while as she’d had to keep her movements slow, subtle, so no one realized what was happening. As a result of all the fumbling, his dick was rock hard by the time she got it out, and it sprung eagerly into her hand.

She leaned her head on his shoulder and he slipped his arm around her, pulling her close. Anyone who looked now would just see a couple of young people having a cuddle. Or possibly a hot redhead sleeping on the shoulder of a young man who could either be her boyfriend or a total stranger.

Carefully, she began to stroke him, getting into a rhythm that would drive him to climax without anyone knowing.

Ryan turned back to the window, giving the appearance of looking out at the darkening sky. Shanna’s grip tightened, her movements grew faster and he grew closer to coming. He dug his teeth into his bottom lip in an attempt to regain some kind of control. It didn’t help—his hormones raged and the familiar tingle at the base of his spine was a dead giveaway.

Looking as chilled out, as casual as possible, he turned to Shanna and whispered, “You’d better get that tissue ready—otherwise I’m going to make an awful mess.”

She gave a single nod of understanding and moved her other hand beneath the jacket, slowly, languidly. It probably looked as though she was just changing position, rather than anything naughtier. Ryan, however, was at the stage where he didn’t care. If anyone happened to look across, happened to confront them, he’d hold a hand up to keep them quiet until he finished.

Book three of the World of Sin series.

Ryan Stonebridge and his friend Kristian Hurst have travelled to London and Paris on their “gap year” adventure, before starting university. Now it’s on to Rome.

The American girls they met in Paris are along for the ride, providing lots of sexy fun for the boys. But as no one in the foursome is looking for commitment, there’s still plenty of scope for hooking up with the locals. Voyeurism, cougars, risky outdoor sex and threesomes abound in the Italian leg of the boys’ European adventure.
